De Tong Tong Fair is een festival dat jaarlijks in Den Haag plaatsvindt, en dat voornamelijk draait om de Indische cultuur, de cultuur van mensen met een Europese en Indonesische afkomst. Voor 2009 heette de Tong Tong Fair vele jaren de Pasar Malam Besar, maar de oorspronkelijke naam was Pasar Malam Tong Tong.
Het Indisch Herinneringscentrum houdt de herinnering levend aan de gebeurtenissen tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Nederlands-Indië, de daaropvolgende Bersiap, dekolonisatie en migratie.

Nederlands-Indië was een Nederlandse kolonie toen de Tweede Wereldoorlog ook in Azië uitbrak. Op 27 februari 1942 werd de geallieerde vloot, waaronder Nederlandse oorlogsschepen onder leiding van Karel Doorman, door de Japanners verslagen tijdens de Slag in de Javazee. Daarna landden Japanse troepen op Java.

Onder witte Nederlanders (bedoeld wordt Nederlanders die zich rekenen tot de oorspronkelijke Nederlandse bevolking)overheerst het idee dat ‘wij’ een verdraagzaam volkje zijn, vrij van racisme. Bij racisme denkt men aan het racisme in de VS en aan de ‘apartheid’ in Zuid Afrika, maar bepaald niet aan Nederland. De suggestie dat witte Nederlanders meer of minder behept zijn met racistische vooroordelen roept bij hen doorgaans grote verontwaar- diging op. Hoe durft men zoiets te beweren? Volgens Wekker echter is ons verleden als koloniale overheerser (ruim 400 jaar) van grote invloed op ons ‘cultureel archief’: opvattingen waarmee wij zijn grootgebracht en die tus- sen onze oren zitten ook zonder dat wij daar erg in hebben.

“Feminism is a sensible reaction to the injustices of the world,” writes Sara Ahmed, self-described feminist killjoy. In Living a Feminist Life, her latest work, Ahmed considers how her own understanding of feminism has developed as a way of “making sense of what doesn’t make sense.” At a time when public scholarship seems to be a thing of the past, she offers a model for what its modern incarnation might look like. The book, while grounded in theory, is also her most personal to date, filled with stories from Ahmed’s everyday, her experience of being “a feminist at work.” “Theory can do more the closer it gets to the skin,” she reminds her readers, demonstrating that good theory, useful theory, is generated from and should be relevant to ordinary life.
Masculinity studies
Inclusive masculinity theory has recently been proposed as a new approach to theorising contemporary masculinities. Focusing particularly on the work of the theory's key exponent, Eric Anderson, this paper offers a critical reading of inclusive masculinity theory in relation to the context of contemporary postfeminism. Building on feminist scholarship which analyses the emergence of a distinctive postfeminist sensibility within the academy, I consider how inclusive masculinity theory both reflects and reproduces certain logics of postfeminism. My central concern is the manner in which this scholarship deemphasises key issues of sexual politics and promotes a discourse of optimism about men, masculinities and social change. Against this view, I argue that critical masculinity studies must foreground the analysis of gendered power relations and posit that the interrogation of contemporary postfeminism is critical to this endeavour.
Race, biopolitics, and the future: Introduction to the special section
We wrote the proposal for this special issue at the beginning of 2015. From our institutional home in the United States South, daily life, class discussions, and academic work felt saturated with biopoltical questions. The year 2014 had ended with waves of protests against racialized police violence and the pervasive criminalization of Black communities and protests had coalesced around a provocative set of signifiers. The #BlackLivesMatter movement, originally a response to the July 2013 acquittal of unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin’s vigilante killer in Florida gained the silent ‘‘hands up, don’t shoot’’ gesture in reference to the August 2014 fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, by a police officer subsequently acquitted by a grand jury. That winter, a New York City policeman was acquitted by a grand jury despite videotaped evidence of the July 2014 choking of Eric Garner, and t-shirts worn at protests and at sporting events called us to remember Garner’s last words:
